From harvesting and the controlled production of small boards to the gluing of high-performance lamellas and their further processing into beams and hybrid components: TURBOO® represents a fully industrialized, precisely controlled process chain. Automated sorting, quality assurance, and protection against mold and pest infestation ensure consistent material performance.

TURBOO® unlocks the potential of giant bamboo for load-bearing applications in construction. Industrial processing yields a bio-based high-performance material with an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio — and a specific modulus of elasticity approximately 8% higher than that of structural steel.

The combination of a rapidly renewable raw material with modern materials technology opens up new possibilities for sustainable construction in architecture, infrastructure, and industrial building.

Bamboo – The Power Plant

The plant grows extremely fast (up to 1 m/day in Brazil), reaches its full size within a few months, and can be harvested repeatedly after 3 years. During its growth, it sequesters large amounts of CO₂ and contributes to the regeneration of degraded soils.

The exceptional performance of bamboo lies in its natural fiber structure. Long, high-strength plant fibers give the material very high structural strength combined with low weight. These properties make bamboo an ideal foundation for new bio-based building materials.

Through industrial cultivation and sustainable plantation management, bamboo is also available as a long-term raw material source for scalable building material production.

Material Technology

TURBOO® technology transforms the natural raw material bamboo into a precisely controlled industrial material. Bamboo canes are processed, split into strips, and bonded into structural components using a specially developed gluing technology.

This process produces beams and building elements with defined geometry and reproducible material properties. The technology enables components in various dimensions, thereby opening up a wide range of applications in the construction industry.

The combination of natural fiber structure and modern processing technology creates a material with high structural performance and industrial manufacturability.

Technological Maturity

TURBOO® technology has been developed and extensively tested over several years. Material testing, industrial processing tests, and small-scale production runs in existing facilities have confirmed the material’s performance.

Even today, TURBOO® can be reliably processed using existing, sometimes state-of-the-art machinery — such as that found in the wood industry. Production partners such as Holzbau Unterrainer and equipment manufacturers such as WEINIG demonstrate that integration into existing processes is technically feasible. Further process optimizations through automation are both feasible and a key lever for scaling.

Studies conducted by research institutions and industrial partners provide reliable data on strength, stiffness, and material behavior, forming the basis for industrial application.

The focus of the next development phase is on establishing pilot production and scaling the technology globally.
